This training course will prepare attorneys and judges to better recognize, respond, understand and interact with autistic individuals as well as individuals with other developmental disabilities. The course begins with an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder, its behaviors, sensory issues and communication and social conduct traits. Next the course delves into the many considerations of the Autistic individuals and the justice system. How to interact with the individuals when building a case, through the bail and incarceration processes and the issues of diversion and Autism as mitigation will also be discussed. The course concludes with case studies and scenarios with possible solutions.

The course shall be an evening event, held on Franciscan’s beautiful campus in The St. Joseph Center Seminar Room.

Presenter: Justin Meade

Justin Meade is a Police Officer, Crisis Intervention Specialist and Disability Advocate based in Northeast Ohio. He is recognized as a Subject Matter Expert on Crisis Intervention & First Responder – Developmental Disability and Mental Health interactions, by various organizations including the Department of Justice and the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy. He has also received numerous awards for his nonprofit work including the “Community Hero” award by Milestones Autism Resources. The “Champion” award by the Live Special organization.” & the ” Community Star” award by the Trumbull 100 Club.

Justin founded the non-profit organization Autism Awareness Training and Acceptance Program – AATAP and has served as its Executive Director & Chief Instructor since 2019 having trained over 1700 professionals in various fields and supporting and educating over 700 individuals with developmental disabilities or mental health conditions and their families. Justin has worked as a police officer for over 10 years with the last 7 being full time as a police officer for the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and now the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities. In addition, Justin also works part time as a police officer for Hubbard Township Ohio.

Due to the costs associated with our course offerings, the Center has implemented a 25% cancellation fee. Those costs relate to food and beverages purchased in advance and the fees we need pay to outside presenters.  Cancellation fees will apply to those that do not show up for the course or those who cancel ahead of its offering.
