Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are often viewed behind a century of science fiction perceptions and fears. Real AI/ML tools however, are no more than combinations of mathematical methods and data structures implemented using internet technologies on a large scale. Numerous concerns have arisen in the areas of privacy, cybersecurity, property and copyrights, ethics and regulation, to name a few. As an attorney understanding the basics of AI/ML is paramount in our technology-based society to meet these new challenges head on. This seminar will demystify AI/ML and provide the participant with a basic understanding of what methods exist, how they are built, and limitations and concerns of use.

The world of artificial intelligence impacts nearly every occupation and profession- lawyers being no exception. Lawyers deal with content and conceptual subject matter that is quite prone to the ruse of artificial intelligence. Examples are myriad, including but not limited to intellectual property, wills, trust and estates, fraud and forgery as well as other crime- all generated by artificial means. Questions of evidentiary quality, authentication and original documentation, writings, voice identification are all AI dilemmas.
