Legal Issues in Polygraph Testing will cover the history of lie detection as well as, types of polygraph tests. This will include question formulation of the polygraph test, and an overview of what occurs during the three phases of the test (Pre-Test, Chart & Post-Test) will be reviewed. Legal Issues like EPPA and significant cases with polygraph testing will be discussed. The possible test results, errors, accuracy, validity and reliability of the test will be explained. The course will conclude with the knowledge needed when hiring an examiner.
For attorneys and counsel working in the criminal or employment law fields, a full understanding of the mechanics polygraph is baseline knowledge. Specialized knowledge regarding the various legal issues and use in court will add to the attorney’s current knowledge base. Guidance on requirements when hiring a polygraph examiner will undoubtedly assist attorneys in their daily practice.

The course shall be an evening event, held on Franciscan’s beautiful campus and will include a light dinner.
Presenter: Brian Kohlhepp
Deputy Chief Kohlhepp is a professional in the criminal justice field who is an active practitioner in police leadership. He was previously the supervisor of the Detective Division conducting investigations specializing in suspicious deaths, sexual assaults, child abuse, and crime scene/forensic evidence. He is well-known for his teaching at the police academy, universities, and continuing education seminars for police, investigators, and attorneys, as well as numerous lectures to various organizations and conferences. He has testified as an expert in Forensic Crime Scene Reconstruction in state court. Deputy Chief Kohlhepp was the lead investigator in a multi-jurisdictional investigation of a violent serial rapist that gained national media attention and led to an arrest and conviction. In addition, he has worked multiple cases with the FBI and was detailed to the Pittsburgh Police Homicide Unit for a homicide of an armored truck employee and a robbery of 2.3 million dollars. This included a national manhunt that gained significant media attention and was featured on America’s Most Wanted. This resulted in an arrest in Florida and a first-degree homicide conviction.
