This training course prepares attorneys and legal professionals to safely, ethically, and effectively integrate artificial intelligence into their legal practices. The course begins with a foundational overview of Large Language Models (LLMs), demystifying generative AI mechanics, data flows, and the root causes of model hallucinations. Next, the course explores the legal, regulatory, and ethical considerations surrounding AI adoption, focusing on ABA Formal Opinion 512, duty of competence, client confidentiality, and candor toward tribunals. Participants will then examine secure daily workflows, including document triage, draft generation, and argument stress-testing. The course concludes with a practical, self-directed blueprint for internal firm implementation, equipping practitioners to establish governance policies, select compliant tools, and manage firm-wide adoption without prohibitive overhead.
The course shall be a half-day event, held on Franciscan’s beautiful campus.

Presenter: Dr. Tyler Brown
Dr. Tyler Brown is Chair of the Department of Engineering and Computing at Franciscan University of Steubenville, where he teaches computer science and constantly engages with issues surrounding artificial intelligence, ethics, education, and institutional use of emerging technologies.
He earned bachelor’s degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics from Penn State, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Iowa State University, specializing in computability theory. Before joining Franciscan in 2023, he served as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Columbia College in South Carolina.
At Franciscan, Dr. Brown has incorporated AI, AI ethics, and responsible-use practices throughout his computing courses and has led faculty workshops on the practical use of AI in teaching and administrative workflows. He has also contributed to the development of university AI-use policies and has been involved in broader institutional discussions about how emerging technologies should be understood, adopted, and governed.
He represented Franciscan University at the invitation-only Builders AI Forum in Vatican City, which brought together technology professionals, thought leaders, and clergy to discuss artificial intelligence, education, and the broader effects of technological change. He also leads a software development incubator focused on real-world projects intended to advance human flourishing.
His approach to AI is strongly pragmatic: understanding what these systems can actually do, where they are unreliable, what risks they introduce, and how they can be integrated into real workflows without sacrificing sound judgment, accountability, or human oversight.
